Dental Fillings Brisbane | What are Inlays & Onlays?

Originally made from gold, inlays and onlays are two different types of fillings that are used in dental restoration and were originally made of gold. In modern dentistry, changes to aesthetic tastes and the availability of tooth coloured fillings means they are often made of porcelain and ceramic materials instead.

  • Inlays are designed to be used on moderately broken teeth.
  • Used in areas where the forces of chewing and grinding are high, such as the molars.
  • Onlays are a similar type of filling that cover and replace more of the tooth for even greater protection.
  • Used in cases where more of the original tooth has already been lost.

Traditionally, the processes involved in providing inlays and onlays take two appointments at our dental clinic in Brisbane, as the fillings have to be hand-crafted in our dental laboratory, Studio 12, before being fitted and cemented.
