Orthodontics Brisbane | Orthodontics

Orthodontics moves your natural teeth that may be crowded or misaligned into a more even position. Not only does orthodontics improve smile aesthetics and patient confidence, but there can also be a number of functional benefits.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the field of dentistry that focusses on developing the jaws and aligning teeth to improve aesthetic and functional outcomes. This can be done through many avenues including metal and clear braces, functional appliances and clear aligners like Invisalign.  Orthodontic appliances apply constant pressure to the teeth and jaws to shape them into the ideal position. The appliances work slowly and treatment can be a year or more depending on the individual’s needs.

Orthodontics may be beneficial if you have concerns about:

  • Tooth alignment – crowding, spacing or uneven teeth
  • Trouble chewing certain foods
  • Food getting stuck between teeth
  • Difficulty cleaning your teeth due to their position

Who can benefit from Orthodontics?

As orthodontics can address a wide variety of concerns, many people across a broad age group can benefit. Whilst most orthodontic patients are teenagers and young adults, many older adults are seeking treatment to create the straight, even smile they have always wanted.

Dr Annabel Wallace is a General Dentist with further training in orthodontics and can address orthodontic concerns of mild to moderate complexity. At BOH Dental, we recommend children have their first orthodontic assessment with one of our experienced clinicians from age 7.

Orthodontic treatment options

Braces form a big part of orthodontic treatment and are used primarily to move teeth into the ideal position. Dr Wallace uses passive self-ligating Damon braces which deliver high aesthetic outcomes with less discomfort for patients.

For patients that are conscious about the appearance of metal braces on their teeth, clear braces are a less noticeable alternative that offers the same effective solution as traditional metal braces.

Invisalign is a removable alternative to braces that is very comfortable and virtually undetectable. The customised aligners do not require brackets or wires like traditional braces and patients do not need to change their diet or oral care routine while in treatment.

For patients that would benefit from jaw shape or position correction, functional appliances, often called a “plate” may be indicated. These may be fixed or removable depending on individual needs. They are often used in conjunction with braces.
